About Child Informed Practice

The process of family separation can be tricky for children to navigate. Child Informed Practice (CIP) is a clinical practice designed to enhance collaboration between parents and keep the best interest of the child/ren at the forefront of their decision making.

The child consultant will spend time drawing, playing and talking with the children. The children are never put in a position where they feel pressured to answer any given question or to answer a question in a particular way. They are not asked to make decisions or to experience the feeling of having to choose between their parents. They are simply given the opportunity to talk about and/or show ‘what it’s like to be me, in my family, at this point in time’. Special care is taken to provide an environment that feels safe and welcoming.

On another day, the child consultant will to talk with the parents, mediators and solicitors (if involved in the matter) about how the children are doing and what their needs seem to be at this point in their development. The child consultant will respect any concerns that the child/ren may express about reporting back sensitive matters.

The consultant will provide recommendations to the parents on how to move forward in their decision making.

This process may sit along side of a mediation, collaboration or as a stand alone service.
